Medication Education Diet Arts Lunch (MEDAL)

760 East 160th Street
Bronx, NY 10456

Many ACCESS consumers are socially isolated or have little or no support from family members, and consequently, few are emotionally or financially equipped to handle the ramifications of this on-going crisis. Further, many cannot benefit from today's life-prolonging treatments if they do not understand and learn how to manage and adhere to the demanding medical regimes. MEDAL allows them to socialize, make friends, have fun, give and receive support; and receive the most up-to-date information about issues of concern. The heart of the MEDAL program is a weekly nutritious lunch followed by talks by speakers and staff of topics such a HIV/AIDS medication adherence, modes of transmission, negotiating safer sex, partner notification, stress reduction and nutrition. MEDAL also provides English and Spanish-language support groups and arts and crafts components where consumers make gifts for family members, friends, and special occasions.
